Obediah Morse
  • Born: 28 Feb 1711, Boston MA
  • Marriage (1): Elizabeth Higginson on 9 Jan 1735 in Salem MA

  General notes:

  Events in his life were:

  • Buhler:, . 10
Probably had taken over his father's silversmithing as the inventory of the latter's estate only listed "2 old Copy Books & sundry small Tools 7-7."
  • Flynt & Fales:, . 3 Scott, in Counterfeiting in Colonial America, indicates that he later went to Connecticut, where he probably did counterfeiting, since he was well-acquainted with the infamous forgers, William Fairfield and Henry Bosworth. In 1742, he traveled to Rhode Island and made a plate for John Potter a noted counterfeiter. Caught and arrested, he was found guilty and sentenced to pay a 1000 fine, stand in the Pillory and have his ears cropped. While he was in jail before his corporal punishment could be carried out, he escaped and was not recaptured until later that summer. A 50 fine was also added to his existing fine for escaping jail.
  • Advertised in the The Boston Weekly News-Letter (Boston MA), 13 Dec 1733, the theft from his shop in King Street of 23 large silver coat buttons and 11 jacket buttons, marked MORS on the back side of each. 3

Obediah married Elizabeth Higginson, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, on 9 Jan 1735 in Salem MA. (Elizabeth Higginson was born on 30 Sep 1714 in Salem MA.)
