Events in his life were:
- Apprenticed about 1757 to David Griffith in Portsmouth NH, though he may have begun training under his father for a short time before his death in 1758. His term under Griffith was arranged by his brother Richard and Benjamin Goodhue. Relations between his master and guardians were rocky, but he managed to finish his time and returned to Salem in 1763/1764. 9

Reverend William Bentley wrote in "June 1793 . . . We then passed to the East School, which had been under Mr. Lang ever since it was opened. It was formerly the fullest school, & has had several assistants . . . Mr. Lang, the Master, is a most worthy man. He was a Silversmith by profession, but reduced in circumstances, he accepted this School, in which he does not succeed to the public wishes. . ." Lang was eventually forced to resign his position. He later worked as a clerk in the Essex Bank. 8
