Silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker

  Events in his life were:

  • He worked circa 1775 as a silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker in Kittery ME 18
  • He worked in 1780-1795 as a silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker in Portsmouth NH before turning over his shop to his brother-in-law and apprentice, William Simes, in 1795. He became a succesful merchant and ship owner. The Exeter Probate Records of 1802 for administration of his estate as of Aug. 5, 1802, show wide shipping interests, and his ads in the New Hampshire Gazette following 1795 show sales of cordage and cables, iron, rum, sugar and flour. 18
  • Obituary printed in the New Hampshire Gazette (Portsmouth NH) on 3 Aug 1802 3
    Includes a long poem signed "Amicus," indicating he died in his 44th year, highly regarded by the local people and "a friend to all mankind."

Martin married Ann Simes, daughter of Joseph Simes and Mrs. Joseph Simes, about 1785. (Ann Simes was born on 3 Jan 1764.)
