Comparisons of his engraved prints with designs found on Boston silver suggested he did work for several silversmiths. He is known to have engraved a copperplate for printing clock dials for Preserved Clapp. The watchmaker Gawen Brown shared shop space with Johnston between 1749 and 1752. 9
