  General notes:

Silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker

Charles Thatcher Emery was the second owner of the jewelry store. He
was born in Portsmouth on July 19, 1830, one of six children of
Thatcher and Elizabeth (Wood) Emery. He married Mary Elizabeth
Pickering, the daughter of Judge James and Ruth Augusta (Miller)
Pickering of Newington, and they had three children. Under his
propritorship, the jewelry store was modernized and continued to
flourish. In March 1868, after running the business for 18 years, he sold
it to Hutchinson and Rowell from St. Johnsbury, VT.
John Holt Hutchinson (1838-1897) was born in Nelson, NH, and was
living in St. Johnsbury where he married his wife, Mary Emma Graham
(1840-1908). He served in the Civil War as a lieutenant in the Third
Vermont Infantry. He ran his newly acquired jewelry store in
partnership with Alfred Dana Rowell who was born in Deering, NH on
February 9, 1839 and died in St. Johnsbury on June 17, 1893. A. D.
Rowell was a highly skilled watchmaker and jeweler but while he and
Hutchinson owned the business, things didn't go as as well as they had
planned. After two years in partnership, John Hutchinson bought out A.
D. Rowell's share of the business. John then hired James Robert
Connell (1848-1906), a very experienced watchmaker from Wells River,
VT. John and James worked together very well and over the next three
years, business greatly improved. In 1873, the two formed a partnership
under the name Hutchinson and Connell and the store did very well over
the next three years. In 1876, James Connell left the business and John
Hutchinson ran it himself.

  Events in his life were:

  • He appeared on the 1860 census taken at Lebanon NH, listed as a goldsmith. He was also enumerated as a master silversmith in Greenville, Greene, TN.
  • He worked circa 1860-1863 as a silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker in Greenville Greene TN listed in the State Gazetteer as A. D. ROWELL & Co. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he returned north.
  • He was a partner in 1868-1870 with John Holt Hutchinson in Portsmouth NH as HUTCHINSON & ROWELL, having bought the shop of Charles Thatcher Emery. The partnership was not successful and Hutchinson bought out Rowell's share after two years.
  • He appeared on the 1870 census taken at Saint Johnsbury VT, listed as a jeweler.
  • He was a partner in 1870-1888 with Theron Metcalf Howard in Saint Johnsbury VT as HOWARD & ROWELL. Rowell's brother Christopher also worked for the firm.

    DEATH OF A. D. ROWELL.

    A. D. Rowell died at his home on Main street last Saturday morning after an illness from consumption lasting over a year. Mr. Rowell was born in Deering, N. H., Feb. 9, 1839, and spent his early life in Lebanon, N. H. About 1860 he went South, locating first at Knoxville, Tenn., and then at Greeneville, Tenn. When the war broke out public sentiment was so strong against the Northerners that he was obliged to leave Tennessee. He came to St. Johnsbury about 1865 and entered the employ of T. M. Howard. In 1870 the firm of Howard & Rowell was formed and continued until 1887 when Mr. Howard withdrew from the business and Mr. Rowell became sole owner. Mr. Rowell was a jeweler of wide reputation, careful and painstaking in all his work, all of which demanded consummate skill and patience.

Mr. Rowell was first married to Miss Delia Alden. She died in 1872. In 1875 he was married to Miss Flora E. Clark of this place, who survives him. He had two brothers, Christopher C. Rowell (deceased) and D. Frank Rowell, and a sister, Mrs. S. N. Homan, both residents of Boston.

He was a member of the North church and a man of sterling business integrity. For a quarter of a century Mr. Rowell had been identified with the material interests of this town, and his death will be much felt by the business men who were his associates. Quiet and undemonstrative in his ways, he was a man that was everywhere esteemed and one that will be greatly missed. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon and was conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. M. Lamson.

The business in which Mr. Rowell had so long been engaged will be continued by his wife under the old firm name.

Alfred married Delia Sibbel Alden on 7 Jan 1868 in Saint Johnsbury VT. (Delia Sibbel Alden was born on 14 Feb 1843 and died on 8 Jul 1872 in Saint Johnsbury VT.)

Alfred next married Flora Clark on 18 Nov 1875 in Saint Johnsbury VT. (Flora Clark was born in 1853 and died in 1946.)
