Events in his life were:
- He worked circa 1855-1860 as a clerk in New York City NY in his father's store, where he was bookkeeper and occassional salesman.
- He was a partner in 1860 with Hermon Griswold Batterson in New York City NY as WILLIAM S. BALDWIN & Co. He and Batterson bought the content of his father's store in a complicated exchange of notes in an attempt to stave off their seizure for debts owed. The ensuing court cases, eventually involving George R. Downing, ended up before the New York Supreme Court.
