A neighbor, Andrew R Gidding, wrote in his diary on 19 Febuary "A Very sad affair took place yesterday morning in the neighborhood. The dwelling of Mr. Barzilla Buckley took fire and consumed together with a large quantity of tinware on hand and of the avails of nearly all the sales of the winter months also all his tools a very valuable collection and stock unwrought part of the furniture only saved; loss estimated at nearly $2000."
Two days later, Buckley packed what had been saved and moved back to Westbrook, where he remain until 1837.
