• , . Originally trained as a butcher, he went to Utica c 1855 to apprentice as a silversmith. After some years as journeyman, he set aside his hammers and signed on with the New York Central Railroad. Badly injured, he left the company and established a rail contracting and heavy freight company that proved very successful.
