- , . He was originally put under the tutelage of Dr. Chauncey of the First Church of Boston. Discerning his pupil's lack of temperment for church studies, Chauncey gave him freedom to apprentice with a silversmith. After finishing his training, however, he remained at the trade for only a short time, preferring more general mercantile interests at which he prospered.
