- He worked in 1806-1820 as a silversmith in Providence RI as Josiah WHITAKER & Co. At some time the firm also included Thomas Whitaker and William Greene who were both mentioned in the notice of dissolution printed on 9 March 1820 in the Providence Gazette. 3
- He worked in 1820 as a silversmith in Providence RI from shop at 55 Cheapside, opposite the First Baptist Meeting House, where he sold and manufactured "Jewelry, Silver Spoons, Gold Beads, Etc." 3
- He appeared on the 1860 census taken at Providence RI, listed without occupation.
- He appeared on the 1870 census taken at Providence RI, listed as a comb manufacturer.
Josiah married Pamelia Andrews, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, on 26 Feb 1811. (Pamelia Andrews was born on 23 Jul 1792 in Providence RI and died on 7 Jan 1876 in Providence RI.)
