Charles A. Whiting, 76, of 49 Central St., who rose from office boy to become owner of Whiting & Davis Company, Plainville manufacturers, died today at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, where he had undergone an operation for appendicitis.
The funeral will be held at the Franklin Universalist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday.
In 1880, at the age of 16, Whiting landed in Plainville with 25 cents in his pocket. He got a job as office boy with the Wade, Davis & Co., jewelry manufacturers. He worked as salesman and held executive berths until he became owner of the firm.
The company is now known as Whiting & Davis, manufacturers of costume jewelry and mesh bags.
