He enlisted in Company D, Madison Home Guards, of the 3rd Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded at the battle of Malvern Hill and again at the battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. As a result of wounds he received, he lost of use of his left arm and hand. After the war, he did not resume his trade; in the 1870 census, he is listed as an expressman living in Lithonia GA.
