• He worked circa 1836-1841 as a jeweler in Vicksburg, Warren, MS
  After selling his business, he moved to St. Louis, where he agreed to join a group traveling overland to California. Arriving in the state in November, 1841, he settled in San Jose and became a prosperous general goods merchant and financier.
