Sad Affair. -- A dispatch was received here, yesterday morning, stating that Mr. O. D. Griswold, of the firm of Hastings & Griswold, of this city, had been shot dead by his brother-in-law, a man named Fowler, of Southwick, Mass. Fowler is a man of ungovernable temper, and had been very abusive of his wife, threatening her life, and so demeaning himself, that he had been arrested, and placed under bonds to keep the peace towards his wife. Mr. Griswold, who was one of the bondsmen, went up Monday for the purpose of withdrawing his bail, and surrendering Fowler to the officers of the law. The latter, yesterday morning, requested, before being surrendered, the privilege of visiting a relative, which was granted. On his return, Mr. Griswold was sitting on the piazza of the house, and as Fowler drove past, he picked up a shot gun which was concealed int he wagon, and fired, placing the whole charge in the side of Griswold. The ladies of the house rushed out and carried the latter inside the door, and then fastened themselves in. The murderer drove into the yard, and deliberately ended his own life by cutting his throat.
Mr. Griswold's father left by the noon train for Southwick, and arrived before his son's death, which took place about 6 p.m. The body will be brought to the city, this morning. It is a most sad and melancholy affair; one that we have no heart to write about.
- He appeared on the 1860 census taken at Hartford CT, listed as a merchant.
