• He was a partner in 1849-1850 with Washington McDonough Root and Frederick A. Chaffee in Pittsfield MA as ROOT, CHAFFEE & BAIRD.

• He was a partner in 1853-1856 with Joseph Chalker Chaffee in Lee MA as CHAFFEE & BAIRD. After the close of the partnership, he became a paper manufacturer. He later became president of the Lee National Bank and represented the county as a state Senator.
