  He apparently travelled a circuit, buying, selling, and repairing a wide range of goods, both to the public and the trade. A receipt against the Melcher Company covering the year 1871, now in the Joseph Downs Collection of Manuscripts and Printed Ephemera at Winterthur Library, records charges for goods including a scythe, rifle, and cake bow, carting and installing a stove, and numerous repairs to silver holloware.

• He appeared on the 1880 census taken at Lewiston ME, listed as a peddler.
