- He worked circa 1835-1855 as an instrument maker in Lexington KY
In 1851 he built his first planetarium, which was installed at Transylvania University. He is known to have made at least eleven more planetaria, now all lost. They were very large, nearing 13 feet in diameter, but noted for their accuracy. He is also credited with building the first steam locamotive in North America.
Thomas married Keziah West on 28 Mar 1810 in Nicholas KY. (Keziah West was born about 1791, died in Jun 1865 in Cincinnati OH and was buried in Cincinnati OH.)
