  General notes:

Jeweler and watchmaker

  Events in his life were:

  • He worked circa 1845-1864 as a jeweler and watchmaker in Washington DC
  • He was a partner circa 1854 with Henry Semkin in Washington DC as WARRINER & SEMKIN
  • Advertised in the Evening Star (Washington DC), 18 Jul 1854, Yankee Made Watches -- Rich Jewelry.
We have been shown a beautifully made silver lever hunting watch, full jeweled, made in Roxbury, Massachusetts, at the manufactory opened there by Mr. Samuel Curtis. This gentleman has entered on the American watchmaking business, the first establishment ever opened in the country, and the watch before us is one of the first made. The whole works of the watch, case and all, are of Yankee manufacture, but the escapement is regarded as superior to those of English watches. As an evidence of the success of this new article of American workmanship, we learn that the proprietor has received orders that will keep his hands busy for a year hence. Gold as well as silver watches are here manufactured equal, if not superior, to those of European make. -- Messrs. Warrener [sic] & Semken, jewelers, Pennsylvania avenue, between 9th and 10th streets, are supplied with these excellent American watches, where they can be seen and purchased, and there also, we may add by the way, is to be had all other kinds of fine watches, rich jewelry, and splendid silver ware. But this American watch is most worth of the public attention, and we therefore suggest a visit to the jewelry palace of the Messrs W. & S. to see this first specimen of American watch manufacture.
  • He appeared on the 1860 census taken at Washington DC, listed as a watchmaker.
  • He worked after 1864 as a jeweler and watchmaker in Fryeburg ME
  • He appeared on the 1870 census taken at Fryeburg ME, listed as a watchmaker.
  • He appeared on the 1880 census taken at Fryeburg ME, listed, with son Edson, as a jeweler.

Chauncey married Abigail Clement Towle on 10 Sep 1855. (Abigail Clement Towle was born on 26 Oct 1825 in Fryeburg ME and died on 8 Jun 1913.)
