- He was a partner in 1845-1859 with George L. Poor in Selma AL as G. L. & J. R. POOR. The firm was the southern outlet for silver produced by JAMES, BALL & POOR. In 1859 the shop was sold to Samuel Freeman Hobbs and the brothers returned to Boston.
- He appeared on the 1850 census taken at Dallas AL, listed as a silversmith.
