- Kane:,. According to court records of 1715, Hurst was a Swede by birth. Based on stylistic elements of his early work, he is thought to have trained in Stockholm before moving to London where he work for a time as journeyman for John House, goldsmith. 9
- He worked in 1699-1701 as a silversmith in Boston MA as a journeyman in the shop of John Conyers. Originally contracted for two years labour, Hurst left his employer after one and was sued for breach of contract. His wages were below those commonly paid in Boston and it is reasonable to assume he was enticed away by another maker. Research has brought forward another possible reason. Hurst mother-in-law, a Mrs Smith, had recently recieved from her lodge Mr. Taylor 550 Lion dollars in rent payment. These turned out to be counterfeit and Hurst suspected that Conyers was the source of the coins.
When he was sued, the makers Edward Winslow and James Barnes posted a £200 surety bond. It is likely that Hurst was working in Winslow's shop at the time and made the elaborate chased sugar boxes that are so unlike any of Winsllow's other work.
