- He was a partner before 1833 with R. M. Kipp in Wheeling WV as STOCKING & KIPP. Dissolution of the partnership was announced on 1 February 1833. It is unclear if the partnership was originally formed in Batavia and moved briefly south or if it began and ended in Wheeling. 43
- He worked in 1833-1839 as a jeweler and watchmaker in Wheeling WV at the end of 1839, his business failed and he declared bankruptcy. He moved his family to Sisterville where he established a flour and grist mill. 43
