Events in his life were:
- New York City NY, c 1793-1800: having left the family farm to seek his fortune, he secured himself an apprenticeship with a New York City silversmith. On his own, he began copying miniature portraits, becoming skillful enough to join with the fashionable portrait painter John Wesley Jarvis in a shop near the Park Theatre. He left the city around 1808 to work in Philadlephia, then moved on to Washngton DC, where he died.
