- He worked in 1762-1787 as a silversmith in Boston MA
He probably began his career by taking over one of the shops formerly run by his master and uncle, Daniel Parker. Parker ceased advertising his shop located between the Golden Ball and the Sign of Admiral Vernon in 1763. Symmes first advertisement was from a shop "near door the Golden Ball." Like his uncle, he was primarilly a retailer of imported and domestic wares and silversmith supplies. By the late 1780s, he had taken up auctioneering. 9

Best neat new-fashion Shoe and Knee Chapes, round Brilliant Cypher Button Stones, Brilliant and Cypher Earing Stones, Brilliant & Cypher Ring ditto. Ring Sparks, Ruby and white Foyle, Buckle Brushes, rough and smooth Files &c. &c. &c." 3
