General notes: He was graduated at Yale in 1754, studied law, and practised in New York City. He was a delegate to the New York Provincial Congress in 1775-1778 and assisted in forming the first state constitution. He was a member of the New York Assembly in 1777-1783, and chosen a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1779, 1781, 1783, 1787, and 1788. He was state senator from 1784 till 1792, and from 1794 till 1809, was once a member of the council of appointment, and was regent of the state university from 1787 until his death. In politics he was a Federalist. Ezra married Charity Floyd, daughter of Nicholl Floyd and Tabitha Smith, on 24 Dec 1765 in Southold NY. (Charity Floyd was born on 20 Jan 1739 in Brookhaven NY and died on 31 Jul 1785.) |
