- He was a partner circa 1830-1868 with William Travis L'hommedieu in Mobile AL as L'HOMMEDIEU BROTHERS, with a shop at 21 or 24 Dauphin Street in 1842. Retaining the firm's name after his brother's death, advertised in 1844 as importers & manufacturers of watches, clocks, jewelry, silver-plated ware, guns and military equipment. Listed from 1859 till 1861 as jewelers. In 1866-67 listed as J.A. L'Hommedieu, jewelry at 54 Dauphin and then 30 Dauphin.
- He appeared on the 1850 census taken at Mobile AL, listed as a merchant, living next door to James Conning.
John married Cynthia Ann May, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, on 3 Sep 1832. (Cynthia Ann May was born on 26 Aug 1811 in Wethersfield CT.)
