- Apprenticed: Isaac Parker, about 1780. To learn "the art and mystery" of the goldsmith and watchmaker. 1
- Flynt & Fales. Probably worked in his home until 1794 when his mother sold the homestead and he removed to Northampton MA. Thompson's History of Greenfield refers to him as "John Russell the Silversmith." "He made silverware, wedding rings, and the gold beads that the well-to-do farmers' wives and daughters of that day loved to wear round their necks." His shop was in Pierce's Block. 3
