• Apprenticed: Ebenezer Strong Phelps, circa 1815, in Northampton MA.
  He did not continue in the trade, but went on to complete a doctorate of divinity at Yale in 1824. It is an indication of his respect for his master's support that he changed his name, adding the middle name of Phelps.
