- , . At the end of his apprenticeship, he became interested in the study of electricity and the idea of telegraphy. In 1826 he erected a line on Long Island, NY over which he sent successful messages. His subsequent attempts to introduce his dicovery commercially caused him so much opposition and discomfiture that he abandoned the subject and left the country, living for years in Paris, where he worked with chemical dyes, amassing a small fortune for his efforts. He returned to America about 1858 and settled in New York City.
