• Apprenticed in 1800 to Barzillai Davison in Norwich CT
Around the year 1802, his master took his family into the country in the face of a yellow fever epidemic. Bentley was left in charge of the inactive shop and filled his idle time reading the Bible and theology. On his master's return, he was given his leave short of finishing his term and took up lay preaching. He later worked as a bronze founder and general metal worker to support his family. His business enjoyed considerable success and he again turned himself to religion.
